When Tony LeRoy was 3, he saw his grandmother. She was talking. The only problem was, she had been dead for years.
“My mother laughed it off, so when it happened again, I kept it to myself,” Mr. LeRoy said recently in his fifth-floor walk-up on West 83rd Street. He leaned forward in his reproduction Eames lounge chair and confided, “It was my first psychic experience.”
He grew up in Flushing, Queens — his mother was a Haitian immigrant and his father had roots in Haiti, Canada and France. In true first-generation style, he has forged a singular American path as a dreadlocked “intuitive counselor” — the term he prefers to psychic — with an office on Lower Broadway and hundreds of clients, including celebrities like Isaac Mizrahi, who has described his experiences with Mr. LeRoy in magazines like W.
During his teenage years in Flushing, Mr. LeRoy, now 36, became fascinated by Manhattan, even though his family pretty much avoided it.
“I was the kid who always loved the city,” said Mr. LeRoy, looking down from his window at the building that Jerry Seinfeld spent five years renovating to house part of his collection of sports cars. “I’d cut school and come in and hang out in Greenwich Village. Everyone here seemed more open-minded than in Queens.”
It was about this time that he started taking his psychic experiences more seriously. He said he often found that he would be hanging out with one friend or another when he’d feel a stomachache coming on. He didn’t understand what was happening.

I recently got back in touch with an old friend named Melanie Stepto, who sent me to a tarot-card reader called Tony LeRoy. She was having difficulty remembering the psychic’s name, and finally she said something like, "He drew a picture of the baby." I screamed. Suddenly my faith in psychics is stronger than ever. All I need now is a diamond ring.
